ABOUT BLF

F
ounded 1976 by Berkeley Law students, the Berkeley Law Foundation (BLF) was the first organization of its kind in the nation, a public interest law foundation. Dedicated to advancing social justice through providing legal services to historically under-served communities, the BLF is an organization of law students and attorneys premised on an income-sharing model of fundraising.

BLF’s primary goal is funding public interest law internships through summer grants for current Berkeley Law students and year-long grants for recent law graduates and new attorneys across the country. Our grants enable the recipients to work on innovative and critical projects that provide desperately needed legal services to communities all around the nation.

Besides providing crucial funding for legal services, BLF works to ensure diversity in legal education and the profession. To this end, BLF created the Phoenix Fellowship, which provides scholarships to outstanding students of color who are applying to Berkeley Law and interested in doing public interest legal work.
